It All Starts With Values

Every one of us has a unique set of values. For me they are joy, passion, purpose, authenticity, and connection. There is power in claiming what you truly value. Not what you think you should value or have been told you should value but what you know is important deep down in your soul.

Think about a time in your life when you felt totally in flow. When you were doing something that just felt right. I guarantee in that moment you were honouring a value or values. On the flipside, think about a time in your life when you were in a place of struggle. What about that situation made you uncomfortable or out of sorts? Which or your values were being stepped on?

I found a place of flow during the three years I served on the board of APRA – an association dedicated to fundraising research, analytics and relationship management. As I joined the board, there was such excitement in the air about what was next for our organization. I loved the work and the feeling that everything we were doing was focused on the future of the organization and our members. But for me what was most fulfilling was the being part of a passionate team that was focused on impact and growth.

As you raise your awareness about your values they can provide direction when you don’t know what step to take next. You can ask yourself “what value will I be honouring if I take this step?”

This is not to say that living your values will always be easy. I have a strong value around authenticity. A very good friend once said to me that I am no good at working with people I don’t like. Well first off, I was so impressed with her saying that to me. And I should clarify I asked for the truth about my shortcomings. And this certainly is a true statement about me. Whether at work or in social settings I am no good at faking it. This way of being sometimes gets me in trouble and makes things uncomfortable. But I have to embrace my desire for authenticity even if playing nice would make things easier.

So no I am not promising that living your values will be a walk in the park. But it will ultimately lead to a fulfilling life.
